Grand Rapids Transit – Grand Rapids grew up along the banks of the Grand River, and downtown still bends around that waterway, with several bridges linking the east and west sides of the city rather than a single unbroken grid. Gerald R. Ford International Airport sits about nine miles southeast of downtown, typically a 15 to 20 minute drive via I-96 or 28th Street. Interstate 196 runs through the heart of downtown, connecting the city west toward Lake Michigan and Holland, while U.S. Route 131 forms the main north to south route, passing directly along the western edge of downtown. Interstate 96 crosses the southern part of the city, providing the primary route toward Lansing and, eventually, Detroit further east. The Rapid, the region’s public transit authority, operates the local bus network along with the Silver Line, a bus rapid transit route running along Division Avenue between downtown and the southern suburbs. Downtown Grand Rapids, along with the adjacent Heartside and East Hills neighborhoods, is fairly walkable and increasingly bike friendly, but reaching the outer suburbs and larger retail areas still generally calls for a car.
