Akron Transit – Akron grew up around its hills and the old Ohio and Erie Canal, and that history still shows in a downtown street network with more curves and elevation changes than the flatter grids found in many Midwest cities. Akron-Canton Airport sits about 15 miles south of downtown, generally a 20 to 25 minute drive via Interstate 77. Interstate 76 and Interstate 77 intersect just south of downtown, together forming the main routes into and out of the city, with I-77 running north toward Cleveland, about 35 miles away, and I-76 heading east toward Youngstown. State Route 8 runs directly through downtown on an elevated freeway section, connecting the city north toward Cuyahoga Falls and south toward the Akron-Canton area. The Metro Regional Transit Authority operates the local bus network, with the downtown Robert K. Pfaff Transit Center serving as the main hub for routes across the city. Downtown Akron, along with the nearby Highland Square neighborhood, offers walkable pockets, but reaching Cuyahoga Valley National Park or the surrounding suburbs still generally calls for a car given the region’s hillier, more spread out terrain.
