Baton Rouge Transit – Baton Rouge sits along a bend in the Mississippi River, and that curve pulls much of the city’s road network out of a strict grid, with several major routes following the river’s path rather than running purely north to south or east to west. Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport lies about seven miles north of downtown, generally a 15 to 20 minute drive via Interstate 110. Interstate 10 runs directly through the city and across the Mississippi River Bridge, a crossing that sees heavy congestion during rush hour given the limited number of river crossings in the area. Interstate 12 splits off to the east, providing an alternate route around downtown for traffic headed toward the northshore or points further east. The Capital Area Transit System, known as CATS, operates the local bus network, with the main downtown transfer center serving as the hub for most routes. Downtown Baton Rouge and the LSU campus area both offer reasonably walkable pockets, but given the city’s spread out layout and limited public transit coverage, a car remains the most practical way to get around for most day to day travel.
