Birmingham Transit – Birmingham sits in a valley between Red Mountain and a series of surrounding ridges, a setting that grew the city around its old iron and steel industry and still shapes how traffic funnels through downtown today. Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport lies about five miles northeast of downtown, typically a 10 to 15 minute drive via I-20/59. Interstate 65 runs north to south through the city, while Interstate 20 and Interstate 59 merge together through downtown before splitting again, making the interchange just west of the city center one of the busier points in the regional highway system. U.S. Route 280 extends southeast from downtown into the over the mountain suburbs like Mountain Brook and Vestavia Hills, a corridor known for heavier traffic during commute hours. The Birmingham-Jefferson County Transit Authority operates the local bus network, known as MAX, with routes centered on a downtown intermodal station. Downtown Birmingham, including the area around Railroad Park and the recently developed entertainment district, has become increasingly walkable, but a car remains the most practical way to reach the surrounding suburbs perched on the ridges above the city.
