Buffalo Transit – Buffalo’s street layout owes a lot to Frederick Law Olmsted, whose radial parkway system still shapes how traffic moves through the city today, with wide boulevards fanning out from downtown toward the outer neighborhoods. Buffalo Niagara International Airport sits about nine miles northeast of downtown, typically a 15 to 20 minute drive via the Kensington Expressway. Interstate 190 serves as the city’s main north to south route, running along the Niagara River and connecting downtown to Canalside before continuing north toward the Peace Bridge and the Canadian border. The Metro Rail, operated by the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority, runs a single light rail line through downtown along Main Street, with the downtown segment free to ride and useful for reaching the theater district, Canalside, and the medical campus. NFTA also operates the citywide bus network, with most routes converging at stops along Main Street and the downtown transit terminal. Winter weather can slow things down considerably, so drivers should expect longer commute times and reduced visibility during lake effect snow events, which are common given the city’s position at the eastern end of Lake Erie.
