Corpus Christi Transit – Corpus Christi curves along the edge of its namesake bay, so the city’s layout follows the shoreline more than a strict grid, with most major routes running either parallel to the water or feeding toward it. Corpus Christi International Airport sits about eight miles west of downtown, a roughly 15 minute drive via State Highway 44 or Interstate 37 depending on your starting point. Interstate 37 comes to an end in downtown Corpus Christi, connecting the city north to San Antonio, while U.S. Route 181 crosses the Harbor Bridge over the ship channel, linking downtown to the Portland and Ingleside areas across the water. The Corpus Christi Regional Transportation Authority operates the local bus network, known as the B, with routes centered on a downtown terminal and service extending out to the Island and the Southside. Reaching Padre Island and Mustang Island from downtown means crossing either the JFK Causeway or the Kennedy Causeway, both of which can see heavier traffic during peak beach season. Downtown and the adjacent Marina area are walkable on their own, but a car remains the most practical way to reach the barrier islands, the outlying suburbs, or the naval air station on the southeast side of the city.
