Dayton Transit – Dayton takes its name in part from the rivers that converge near downtown, and that confluence of the Great Miami, Mad, and Stillwater rivers still shapes the street network today, with a series of bridges linking downtown to the surrounding neighborhoods across the water. Dayton International Airport lies about 12 miles north of downtown, typically a 20 minute drive via Interstate 75. Interstate 75 runs directly through the city on a north to south axis, connecting Dayton to Cincinnati about 50 miles south and Toledo further north, while Interstate 70 crosses just north of downtown, providing the main east to west route toward Columbus and Indianapolis. Wright-Patterson Air Force Base sits about 10 miles northeast of downtown, and traffic on the surrounding roads can pick up noticeably around base shift changes. The Greater Dayton Regional Transit Authority operates the local bus network, including an electric trolley bus system that has served the city for decades, with the downtown Wright Stop Plaza acting as the main transfer hub. Downtown Dayton and the adjacent Oregon District are walkable, but reaching the surrounding suburbs, the air force base, or Carillon Historical Park still generally calls for a car given the region’s spread out layout.
