Durham Transit – Durham anchors the northern point of the Research Triangle, and its road network reflects that role, with several corridors built specifically to connect the city to Raleigh and Chapel Hill rather than just circulating internally. Raleigh-Durham International Airport actually sits closer to Durham than Raleigh, about 15 miles southeast of downtown, typically a 20 to 25 minute drive via Interstate 40. The Durham Freeway, State Route 147, cuts through the middle of the city and serves as the fastest way to move between downtown, Duke University, and the southern parts of town. Interstate 85 crosses the northern edge of Durham, linking the city to Greensboro to the west and providing a direct route into Raleigh to the east. GoDurham operates the local bus network, with routes centered on a downtown transit station, and GoTriangle runs regional buses connecting Durham to Chapel Hill and Raleigh for those commuting between the three cities. Downtown Durham has become increasingly walkable in recent years, with the American Tobacco Campus and the Durham Bulls stadium area drawing foot traffic, though a car or regional bus is still the most reliable way to reach the university campuses and the surrounding Triangle communities.
