Green Bay Transit – Green Bay sits at the mouth of the Fox River where it empties into the bay that gives the city its name, and downtown splits along both banks of the river, with several bridges tying the east and west sides together. Green Bay Austin Straubel International Airport lies about seven miles southwest of downtown, typically a 15 minute drive via Interstate 41 or Airport Drive. Interstate 41 runs north to south along the western part of the city, serving as the main route toward Appleton and Oshkosh to the south, while U.S. Route 41’s older business route still threads closer through some of the older commercial corridors. State Route 172 forms a short connector spur near Lambeau Field, useful on game days when traffic around the stadium gets significantly heavier than usual. Green Bay Metro operates the local bus network, with routes converging at a downtown transfer point, though as in much of the region, coverage thins out toward the outer suburbs. Downtown Green Bay and the Broadway District along the river are walkable, but reaching Lambeau Field, the outlying suburbs, or the bayside neighborhoods generally calls for a car given the city’s spread out layout.
