Huntsville Transit – Huntsville has grown rapidly around its aerospace and defense industry, and the road network shows it, with newer parkways built specifically to move commuters between residential areas and the sprawling Redstone Arsenal and Cummings Research Park employment centers. Huntsville International Airport sits about 12 miles southwest of downtown, generally a 20 minute drive via Interstate 565. Interstate 565 runs east to west through the city, connecting downtown to Redstone Arsenal and the research park before continuing on to meet Interstate 65 to the west, the main route toward Birmingham and Nashville. U.S. Route 231/431 passes through the city as well, serving as a major north to south corridor for local traffic. The Huntsville Shuttle, operated by the city’s transit division, runs a limited bus network, though coverage is fairly modest compared to larger metro areas, reflecting the city’s continued reliance on cars. Downtown Huntsville, particularly around Big Spring Park and the Twickenham Historic District, is walkable, but reaching Redstone Arsenal, the research park, or the surrounding suburbs still generally requires a car given the spread out nature of the city’s rapid growth.
