Montgomery Transit – Montgomery sits along a bend in the Alabama River, and downtown’s older streets radiate outward from that riverfront rather than following a strict modern grid, a layout that dates back to the city’s early days as a river port. Montgomery Regional Airport lies about seven miles southwest of downtown, typically a 15 minute drive via I-65 or U.S. Route 80. Interstate 65 runs north to south through the city and serves as the main route connecting Montgomery to Birmingham to the north and Mobile to the south. Interstate 85 terminates in Montgomery as well, providing a direct route northeast toward Atlanta and intersecting with I-65 just south of downtown. The Montgomery Area Transit System operates the local bus network, with the downtown transfer station serving as the main hub for routes reaching most parts of the city. Downtown, including the Riverfront and the area around the Capitol, is walkable and increasingly geared toward pedestrians, but given the city’s spread out layout beyond that core, a car is the most practical way to reach the outer neighborhoods and surrounding suburbs.
