New Haven Transit – New Haven’s original nine square plan still forms the core of downtown, one of the earliest planned grids in the country, with the Green sitting at its center and Yale’s campus wrapped tightly around the surrounding blocks. Tweed New Haven Airport lies just a few miles southeast of downtown, generally a 10 to 15 minute drive, though most travelers flying into the region still rely on Bradley International Airport near Hartford, about 45 miles north. Interstate 95 runs along the city’s southern edge on its way between New York and Boston, while Interstate 91 branches north from downtown toward Hartford, and the interchange where the two meet ranks among the busier points in the state highway system. Union Station, just southwest of downtown, serves as a major regional rail hub, with Metro-North commuter trains reaching Grand Central Terminal in Manhattan in under two hours, alongside Amtrak and Shore Line East service. The Connecticut Transit New Haven division operates the local bus network, with routes centered on the Green and Union Station. Downtown and the Yale campus area are highly walkable, making New Haven one of the more pedestrian friendly cities on this list, though a car still helps for reaching the shoreline neighborhoods and surrounding suburbs.
