Norfolk Transit – Norfolk’s location on the Elizabeth River and Hampton Roads harbor means water shapes the city’s road network almost as much as land does, with several tunnels and bridges standing in for routes a landlocked city would simply pave straight through. Norfolk International Airport sits about seven miles northeast of downtown, typically a 15 to 20 minute drive via Interstate 64 or Norview Avenue. Interstate 264 cuts through the heart of downtown, connecting Norfolk to Virginia Beach to the east and linking up with Interstate 64 to the west, which itself passes beneath the harbor via the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel on its way toward Hampton and Newport News. That tunnel, along with the Midtown and Downtown Tunnels connecting Norfolk to Portsmouth, can back up significantly during peak hours or bad weather, so locals plan around them. Hampton Roads Transit runs the regional bus network along with The Tide, a light rail line connecting downtown Norfolk to Naval Station Norfolk and Newtown Road to the east. Downtown and the adjacent Ghent neighborhood are walkable on their own, and a passenger ferry connects downtown Norfolk across the river to Portsmouth, but a car is still the most reliable way to reach the naval base, the beach, or neighboring cities across the water.
