Salem Transit – Salem straddles the Willamette River, with the Center Street and Marion Street bridges carrying most of the traffic between the main downtown core and West Salem on the opposite bank. Salem Municipal Airport handles general aviation just south of downtown, but most travelers flying into the region use Portland International Airport instead, about 45 miles north, typically a 50 to 60 minute drive via Interstate 5. Interstate 5 runs along the eastern edge of the city, serving as the main route north toward Portland and south toward Eugene, while State Route 22 branches west from downtown toward the Oregon coast. Commercial Street and Liberty Street form two of the main north to south corridors running through the downtown core, feeding into the surrounding neighborhoods. Cherriots, the local transit district, operates the city’s bus network, with a downtown transit center serving as the main hub for routes reaching most parts of the city and connecting to regional service toward Portland. Downtown Salem, along with the area around Riverfront Park, is walkable, but reaching the outer neighborhoods and surrounding Willamette Valley communities still generally requires a car.
