Spokane Transit – Spokane sits where the Spokane River drops over a series of falls right through the middle of downtown, a feature that shapes the surrounding street grid and gives the core of the city a distinct north and south split. Spokane International Airport lies about seven miles southwest of downtown, generally a 15 minute drive via Interstate 90. Interstate 90 runs east to west through the heart of the city, serving as the main route for reaching downtown as well as points further east toward Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, roughly 30 miles away. U.S. Route 2 and U.S. Route 395 both pass through Spokane as well, useful for trips north toward the Canadian border or further into rural eastern Washington. The Spokane Transit Authority runs the city’s bus system, with the Plaza serving as the main downtown hub where most routes converge. Downtown itself is fairly walkable, with the Riverfront Park area and the Spokane River Centennial Trail offering car free ways to move along the river, though reaching outlying neighborhoods and the South Hill still generally requires a car given the city’s hillier, more spread out terrain on its outskirts.
